Our Wildlife Pond

Having a pond is known to be one of the best ways to attract wildlife into any garden. It provides homes, breeding grounds, bathing spots and food and water for all types of creatures including birds, frogs, toads, newts and insects. These animals in turn help with pest control and pollination – all very useful.

With this in mind we decided we must have one in the Wymondley Community Garden. In early 2022 we set to work. We were kindly donated a rigid pond liner by one of our volunteer gardeners and with the addition of a flexible pond liner we dug a hole and put the liners down. We then built up an area inside with stones to create an easy way for the pond’s inhabitants to climb in and out.

Once the pond was dug and lined, we filled it with rainwater and a cleverly constructed mesh was fixed inside to sit just below the water level. This is to ensure that no people or animals can fall in!

Our plan is to eventually create a rocky, planted area, with hiding places for animals, around the back of the pond. This will eventually be screened by grasses and tall wildlife-attracting plants. The front of the pond will be a flatter, more accessible area for easy visibility and hopefully activities such as pond dipping.

Once the weather warms up we will soon start adding some pond plants and many more marginal and surrounding plants will go in too.

Hopefully it will soon be a little haven, buzzing with activity!

Our gardening club sessions are held from 9am-12pm on the third Saturday of every month. Free to attend and all ages and abilities welcome.
