Our Wormery

Thanks to Wormery, in Hitchin, we have been donated a beautiful deluxe 4 tier wormery. We decided to set it up in advance of our Open Day in April 2022, held to celebrate Community Garden Week. It was great to see the worms wriggle and squirm into their new home.

We have been excitedly learning about what these wonderful creatures do! Did you know worms have 5 pairs of hearts? Most importantly they turn our rotting food waste into beautiful rich compost, to help us grow the plants in our wonderful community garden. They will eat all sorts of dead and decaying organic material like peelings, bread, cooked and uncooked scraps, tea bags, egg shells and kitchen towels.

As they eat our old food and turn it into compost, we can add another tier to our wormery, which can hold 62 litres of compost! The wormery also produces liquid feed, which we can water on our plants to help them grow well to produce fruits and vegetables.

Our gardening club sessions are held from 9am-12pm on the third Saturday of every month. Free to attend and all ages and abilities welcome.
