Gardening Club: Nov ‘21

Living Willow

Our busy session on the morning of the 20th November focused on Living Willow and creating the beginnings of an arch across one of the paths in the community garden. The living willow structure was straightforward, fairly quick to create and effective to look at. Our gardener, Jayne, explains more about how it was built below.

It was wonderful to see some new faces at the gardening club. As well as creating our willow structure, today’s gardeners worked on the vegetable beds, potted up some strawberries, dug in the base for new pond and weeded some plant and veg beds.

Written by our gardener, Jayne;

“This morning in the community garden, with guidance from Nicky, several of us began to make a living willow tunnel. We cut the willow at 45 degree angle and pushed each piece into the ground about 30cm to form a lattice framework with uprights at each end of the tunnel to strengthen it.  We bent the tops over to form the beginning of an arch at each end.

Gradually over time as the willow grows and shoots it can be tied in to the form a complete tunnel. Some of us weaved circles and a star shape from the willow to fit in the gaps in the tunnel to create ‘windows’. A great morning’s work to help the environment and be a living structure for everyone to enjoy in the future.”

Our gardening club sessions are held from 9am-12pm on the third Saturday of every month. Free to attend and all ages and abilities welcome.
